UNC History Community,

We hope everyone is doing well this week and taking the time you need to adjust to the fall semester. As the DHL begins its work for another academic year, we hope to hear about your work in the history field. Continue reading to learn how you can help with digital history projects.

1. Summer 2023 Student Achievements

As summer comes to a close, please share your summer achievements with the DHL! We want to hear about your work, research, and travels. Please fill out the survey here.

2. Historical GIS Course

This semester, we are excited to offer a Historical Geographic Information System (GIS) course. The five-unit course will cover the basics of QGIS and guide you through the initial phases of your own project. We will be meeting on Tuesday, September 12 at 11:30 a.m. in Carolina Hall 320 to go over Module 2. Alternatively, the course will be made available for asynchronous participation on Canvas.

To enroll, please email dhl@email.unc.edu.

3. Uniting the States with Telegraphs from 1844-1862

Edmund Russell, a history professor at Carnegie Mellon University has created an interactive map showcasing the history of telegraphs in the United States. “My great, great grandfather helped to build the first telegraph line across the West, which completed the transcontinental telegraph system,” Russel said in an interview with CMU News. “I learned that historians have only scratched the surface of telegraph history.” Read more here.

4. Primary Source Materials

We are compiling a list of online archival collections graduate students and faculty already use in their own research. Feel free to circulate the form among your circles as well. Please add your favorite online resources for primary source materials here.

As always, you can request changes to your personal departmental page, and advertise news stories and events, here.

Make sure to contact the Digital History Lab if there are any skills you want to learn, need support with your own digital history projects, or are interested in our podcast!
