UNC History Community,
Happy Wednesday! We hope everyone had a restful and restorative long weekend. With the semester in full swing, the DHL has a lot of events planned to help you with your digital humanities research this spring. Keep reading to learn more!

1. DHL X HUA Meet-&-Greet:

The History Undergraduate Association is hosting a meet-&-greet with the DHL on Monday, February 20 at 5:30 p.m. The DHL assists the department with digital development and research software, and they want to extend their knowledge to the undergrads! The event is open to anyone interested in the digital humanities and digital pedagogy. We hope to see you on Monday in Pauli Murray 569.

2. ChatGPT Discussion:

Faculty and graduate students – the DHL and UNC Libraries are hosting a ChatGPT discussion on Thursday, February 23 at 4 p.m. in Pauli Murray 569. DHL Directors Sarah Miles and Maddie McGrady will be joined by Digital Research Services staff Lorin Bruckner and Matt Jansen to discuss AI and pedagogical ethics. We will have a short presentation on this new technology from the Lori and Matt and will leave time to discuss pedagogical tools and brainstorm ideas for how to adapt to new technology in the classroom!

3. New Podcast Episode – “Turning the Map”

The Digital History Lab at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill presents The Past Presented — a show about the tools, techniques, and technologies scholars use to study the past and conversations with the folks who use them.

In Episode One, “Turning the Map”, PhD Candidate Nathan Gill talks to co-hosts Maddie McGrady and Sarah Miles about his research on human-environment relationships and systems of labor in the Ecuadorian Andes. In particular, he talks about how GIS mapping allowed him to turn the map – literally and figuratively – and reconsider assumptions about human relationships and the built environment around one of the oldest functioning haciendas in Ecuador: Guachalá. You can listen to the episode here.

Make sure to contact the Digital History Lab if there are any skills you want to learn, need support with your own digital history projects, or are interested in our podcast!

Thanks for reading,

The DHL Team (Cameron, Madeleine, & Sarah)
